Best Life Insurance 2026: Only 6 Passed Our Checklist

A checklist with checkmarks on a clipboard, next to a pen

Quick take

  • We screened for insurers offering fast, no-medical-exam coverage — the same thing most people searching “best life insurance” actually want.
  • Out of the field we researched, six companies cleared every bar on our checklist: Ethos, Ladder, Haven Life, Banner Life, Fabric by Gerber Life, and Nationwide.
  • Banner Life had the highest no-exam coverage ceiling ($4M); Haven Life carries the strongest financial backing (A++, via MassMutual).
  • There’s no single “best” — the right one depends on how much coverage you need and how fast you want an answer.

Search “best life insurance” and you’ll get a dozen lists that mostly agree with each other and mostly read like ads. We wanted something narrower and more useful: which companies actually deliver on the thing most people want when they start that search — real coverage, without a medical exam, without weeks of waiting.

So we built a checklist first, then checked the field against it. Six companies passed all five bars.

Our checklist

To make the list, a company had to clear every one of these:

Offers a no-medical-exam path to coverage
Application can be completed entirely online
AM Best financial strength rating of A- or better
At least $1M in coverage available without an exam
Approval is typically same-day or near-instant
How we did this:This list is based on publicly available information from each company’s own disclosures, AM Best’s ratings database, and independent coverage cited in the sources below — not on paid placement. EraLife is not affiliated with, and does not receive compensation from, any company named on this page. Ratings, coverage limits, and figures reflect our research as of August 2026 and can change — confirm current terms directly with any insurer before applying.

How to actually choose

Once a company clears the basics above, the decision usually comes down to three questions:

  • How much coverage do you need?If it’s above $1–1.5M without an exam, that narrows things to Ethos, Ladder, or Banner Life.
  • Do your needs change over time?If you expect to need less coverage in 10–15 years (mortgage paid off, kids grown), Ladder’s adjustable coverage is the only one built for that.
  • How much does the underlying carrier’s rating matter to you?Haven Life’s policies carry the single strongest financial backing on this list.

Whichever direction fits, the fastest way to see real numbers for your situation is to just start an application — most of the companies above, including EraLife’s own quote flow, take under 10 minutes and don’t require a medical exam to get a decision.
